Understanding International Sizing Systems

Shopping internationally — whether from a European boutique or a US-based online store — means navigating different sizing systems. The three main standards you'll encounter are US, UK, and EU (European) sizing.

Key Differences Between Systems

US Sizing uses numerical sizes (0-20+ for women, S-XXL for general apparel) and is the baseline for most North American brands. US shoe sizes use a unique numbering system that differs from both UK and EU.

UK Sizing is similar to US sizing but typically runs 4 sizes smaller for women's clothing. A US women's size 8 is approximately a UK size 12. For men, the difference is less dramatic.

EU Sizing uses a completely different numerical scale. Women's clothing starts around 32-34 for the smallest sizes and goes up. EU shoe sizes use the Paris Point system, which is universal across genders.

Tips for International Shopping

  1. Always check the brand's own size chart — International conversions are approximations
  2. Read reviews — Other shoppers often mention whether items run large or small
  3. Consider the country of origin — Italian and French brands tend to run smaller, Scandinavian brands larger
  4. Use measurement-based conversions — Our Size Converter uses actual measurements for more accurate results
  5. Factor in fabric — Stretchy materials are more forgiving; structured fabrics need precise sizing
